Why the fastest response usually wins, even when it isn't the most polished one.
The uncomfortable finding
Across the teams we work with, the single strongest predictor of whether an inbound lead converts isn’t how well it’s qualified, how detailed the follow-up is, or who sends it. It’s how fast the first response goes out.
Under ninety seconds, conversion holds. Past about five minutes it falls off a cliff, and by the next morning you are effectively starting a cold conversation with someone who has already talked to two competitors.
Why speed beats polish
A fast, slightly generic reply gets a conversation started. A perfect reply the next day gets read after someone else has already booked the meeting. Buyers are not grading your prose — they are deciding whether you are responsive enough to be worth the risk.
How to actually hit it
You cannot staff your way to ninety seconds. What works is separating acknowledgement from substance: an immediate, accurate, personal-enough first touch that buys you time to do the real work properly.
That first touch is almost always automatable. The follow-up that matters usually isn’t — and shouldn’t be.
